Fashion industry lambast Bhandarkar for distorting reality

The movie, starring Priyanka Chopra , Kangana Ranaut and Mugdha Godse in main roles, tells the story of a small-town girl who comes to Mumbai to be a supermodel and ends up getting exploited by the fashion industry. There is another character of a cocaine snorting model (Kangana) who ends up losing her mental balance. The third character is that of a model who marries a gay designer.

The film has many male characters with homosexual tendencies. It shows modeling agencies that use and dump models.


This negative portrayal of the fashion industry has angered many people in the fashion world.

Designer Rina Dhaka believes the movie distorts facts.

“The angle of the movie is exaggerated and is not relevant. I am in this profession for the past 20 years and I have not seen any exploitation,” Dhaka is quoted by a news agency.

"The catwalk on the ramp requires models to stay fit. They need to remain fit to walk on the ramp. If they indulge in drugs, they won't be able to walk," Dhaka said contradicting Bhandarkar’s assertion that models do drugs to stay lean.

Well-known designer Tarun Tahiliani did not agree with Bhandarkar’s viewpoint that girls from middle-class families are exploited in the industry.

“They would probably not send their girls for modeling (after seeing the movie),” feared Tahiliani.

At the box-office, ‘Fashion’ got a good opening and is presently doing fairly well. A final verdict on the film can be expected by the end of this week.
